Why We Love It

Code Combat is a gamified online system that walks you and your students through learning to code in either Python or Javascript. You don’t need any previous programming experience to use or play Code Combat.

There are Lesson Plans for each module (lesson) in the Resource Hub section of the Teacher Dashboard. Access to the Teacher Dashboard comes as part of the Classroom License that you can purchase through Homeschool Buyer’s Coop.

How We Use It

I purchased a subscription to Code Combat through Homeschool Buyer’s Coop in January of 2017. When we first started using the subscription, there was a student page that took you to the next lesson each time you completed a challenge, which is different than the way the main site works. Code Combat has listened to their users and changed this so that students see the level maps (see one in the first screenshot above). I like the maps. I think they give you a better feel for how far you are in the level and the visual appeal helps keep students motivated.

Our aim is to have the kids “play” Code Combat twice a week, working through the levels. We started with Computer Science 1 using Python and it has been a lot of fun. Remind your students to check the help for each level if they are having trouble, as they do a good job of walking you through hints to keep you on track!
