How To Use Homeschool Planet For The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts

We use Homeschool Buyer’s Coop’s Homeschool Planet online lesson planner to plan our subjects for the year. This year we started using The Good and the Beautiful for a number of subjects, including language arts.

One of the things that comes up a lot on the facebook group for the language arts curriculum is that students often test at a level lower than expected. That was us for sure. Following the advice that is often given, we started right where we tested – level 1 for my 9 year-old and level 3 for my 10 year-old. This has proven to be a wonderful choice!

I originally entered all the lessons into Homeschool Planet – one per day – and then added the daily work to each day, which is simple to do. You enter it once and tell Homeschool planet to add it to each day.

What I found was that some days we worked through more than one lesson, but I couldn’t easily move the next lesson forward using the “merge with previous” option in Homeschool Planet without moving all the daily work along with it and cluttering up our views.

My solution was a simple one. I created a second class for each child containing the daily work, thus separating the lessons into their own class. This kept all our completed assignments intact for my records and allows me to easily move lessons between days since they are now independent of the daily work as far as the lesson planner is concerned.

More importantly, this lets the rescheduling helper (one of my favorite features!) work without duplicating the daily work. This way we can work through the lessons at our own pace, going faster on the easy ones and taking our time where we need to focus and still have the daily work tasks with links to our Flippity spelling and challenging words practice.

Every day I open the Homeschool Planet tab I keep pinned in my browser I am grateful I found such an awesome planner. It is easy to use and flexible for those mid-year changes like this one that I didn’t anticipate making.
